Recapture The Magic

Back on October 6th, 2001, CMR "knocked the lid" off the Georgia program with a hobnailed boot victory in Neyland Stadium (that was also a noon kick-off). What followed was 40+ wins, 3 SEC Championship game appearances, 2 SEC Championships, and a Sugar Bowl trophy in a 4 year span. This was the greatest stretch in Georgia football history outside of the the time that guy named Walker played between the hedges.

Back then, the Bulldogs were the beast of the east and the cream of the SEC crop. However, 9 short years later, I believe this program under CMR sits at a crossroads. Despite 2 losses already this season, a win in Knoxville will keep the Dawgs on track for a winner take-all showdown with Florida in Jacksonville on Halloween night. A loss on the other hand could send the season spiraling out of control. At that point, I believe we are staring 7-5 or 6-6 dead in the face.

Bulldog nation is getting restless and frankly they have every right to be. The product CMR and his coaching staff have put on the field starting in 2006 has been disappointing to say the least. Take away the latter half of the 2007 season (because remember the first half of that season was embarrassing to say least with a home loss to South Carolina and that annihilation at Neyland) and people would really be in an uproar. Our pre-season #1 team in 2008 really didn't play worth a damn all season.

Now, in 2009, the Dawgs are 3-2 traveling to Knoxville for a 12:21 kick-off against a terrible Tennessee team who they should absolutely destroy. The Vols have a new coach and a team hungry for their first big win of the season, a victory over a rival they shouldn't beat to give them hope for a better tomorrow. Sounds familiar doesn't it, kind of like Georgia-Tennessee 2001? Let's hope for another Georgia victory but more importantly let's hope this is a spring board like that 2001 game turned out to be.

I may be putting too much stock into this game and I realize comparing it to the 2001 game may be a bit of a stretch. After all, this is the first time neither team has been ranked in God knows how long and how much can we expect to learn from playing an awful Vols team. That being said, saying this game is a "must win" is an understatement. With both Florida and Alabama on a collision course for another SEC Championship game and the winner getting a shot at a National Championship (which they will win unless the play USC), Georgia cannot afford to fall further behind.

The bad news is I think we are dangerously close to slipping into mediocrity again, if we're not already there. The good news is I firmly believe the talent is there to bow up against the Mighty Gators and give them or any other SEC team a run for their money. Unfortunately, something is missing with this team and the program in general and it's been missing for awhile. I have an idea of what's missing but that's another post for another time.

I'm posting this because between the celebration penalty talk and the general consensus from Georgia fans that Tennessee is not very good, it just seems like the importance of this game on Saturday has been lost in the shuffle. I just hope the team and coaches have mentally moved on from Saturday and can recapture some of that magic from yesteryear dammit. Go Dawgs!!!!

Starting QB in '10

Lyle Allen has decided to quit baseball and will walk-on the Georgia Football team in the spring. There is very litle chance he will ever be relevant but he was a great high school QB. His Senior year he was named the AAA State Offensive POY passing for 3,000+ yards and 37 total TD's.
Even though he is dominating on the gridiron, maybe Trope will quit football to play baseball.

Undefeated Cadets host region favorite McIntosh

Since joining Region 2-AA, the Benedictine football team has felt as though it hasn't gotten the respect it has deserved.

If getting out to the school's best start since 1997 hasn't changed others' perceptions of the Cadets, a win tonight could. BC hosts McIntosh County Academy at Memorial Stadium at 7:30. The Buccaneers have made the postseason five consecutive seasons and are a perennial favorite in one of Class AA's toughest regions.

"If we can show everyone we can beat McIntosh, we'll have a great chance of making the playoffs," said sophomore running back Michael Summers. "It'll open up some eyes in the region and everyone will have more confidence in us."

Benedictine, with a 5-0 overall record (3-0 in region play), is off to its best start in 12 seasons, while McIntosh (3-1, 2-0) has won three in a row since dropping its season opener against Liberty County.

For BC coach Mark Stroud, the Cadets' showdown against McIntosh isn't so much about changing how people see his team, it's simply about staying in the chase for a region championship. "If you win the first game you're tied for first place. If you win the second one, you're tied for first place. You win the third one, you're tied for first place, you're just not tied with as many teams," Stroud said. "It's controlling your destiny each week."

One person who doesn't have to be convinced of BC's place among the region's top teams is McIntosh coach Robby Robinson. "We're playing an undefeated team and we're playing an undefeated team that's very good," Robinson said. "They're very fundamentally sound. They've got some explosive and skilled players on offense and they're very well-coached."

A year ago, the Cadets jumped out to a 21-7 lead, but just before halftime a blocked punt led to the Buccaneers trimming the BC lead to seven heading into intermission. MCA carried the momentum into the second half and went on to a 42-21 victory.

"I think it's about out of our minds," BC linebacker Matthew Shay said. "We're a brand new team now. Last year, we started out great and we let it go, it was a heartbreaking loss and a lot of us felt that."

Striving for perfection
Robinson isn't concerned about the Cadets having extra incentive stemming form last season's meeting. "To me, they'll be motivated to stay undefeated and move to 6-0," Robinson said. "That's motivation enough."

Shay, with a team-leading 35 tackles, headlines a defense that has been stellar this season. Through its first five games, the Cadet defense has allowed just 29 points. But to maintain its average of less than six points against per game, BC will have to slow down a Buccaneer rushing attack led by Alvin Jackson.

The junior running back has 662 yards in just four games with eight touchdowns on 105 carries and has helped the Bucs average 310 rushing yards a game. "Alvin is a power-type of guy," Robinson said. "He doesn't have great speed but he likes to run over folks."
Shay said: "They're definitely the first real tough test we've had. They're good, but we're good as well."

Offensively, the Cadets are led by their power rusher, senior John Williams, who enters averaging 96 yards a game and has scored seven touchdowns. Summers is averaging 79 yards a game and leads the team with eight touchdowns.

"They have some great athletes," Summers said. "For us to move the ball on them, we have to execute our blocking and have to just play as a team."

I was not aware of the dancing by the players until it was brought up on the post game call-in show. Obviously, there were a number of fans irritated by the players dancing to “Swag Surfing” on the sideline during a 17-17 game in the 4th Quarter. Maybe no one was more irritated than the best college football kicker ever. When asked by Jeff Dantzler on the post game show what Coach Dooley would have done to his players for actions like this, Butler said, “They won’t allow me to say that on the radio. I just know it was very embarrassing. But I do know Drew would not want to come home if he partook in it.”

Now I have no problem with the players getting excited and I don‘t really blame them for it. But there is a time and place for certain things. In a tied College football game, which has an actual band in the stadium, I’d rather have my 100+ ranked team being coached on what is and isn’t a penalty than having Club Ice take over Sanford Stadium. Coach Richt might be the best coach ever to lead this program and no one will argue he is an even better person. It is impossible to police everything but he might want to ask Dr. Adams and Mr. Evans which one of them approved the song that chronicles some of the player's January activities.

This is probably being blown out of proportion and is a minute thing for a team that went on to win, is 3-1, and ranked in the top 15. College Football just deserves better.

A couple decent quotes I came across today...

I don't follow college recruiting all that closely, but this also was kind of cool...

The Bulldogs appear to have made some major headway with running back Marcus Lattimore, who is considered the No. 1 back in America.

“I have to say that they are back in it for me,” Lattimore told Scout.com’s Chad Simmons. “Georgia has never pressured me and that meant a lot. . . . Me, my dad, and my cousins went down to the game and it was crazy. The atmosphere, the crowd, the game, it was all ridiculous. The students were so loud the entire game and it was great to be there for that. I couldn’t even hear myself think on that last play because it was so loud in there.”

As impressed as Lattimore was with the game-day environment, he said he was even more moved by separate letters from Georgia coach Mark Richt he and his mother received the same day earlier last week.

“He listed 10 reasons why I should go to Georgia,” Lattimore told Scout. “He said that I fit the offense like a glove, he said that the location is not too close and not too far, and things like that. They were all legit reasons for me to look at Georgia again. I was not expecting anything like that so it kind of blew me away.”

Senior receiver Kris Durham, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery during the offseason, returned to receiving drills Wednesday for the first time.

Durham was kept out of any competitive situations, Richt said, but he got work in catching passes, which was an important benchmark.

“It’s encouraging and certainly he’s excited about it,” Ball said. “And it’s always good to have Kris around.”

Time to Move On

but before that, Hale had some finial thoughts on game 1. He has to be one of the best beat writers in the country and he thinks the ship can be righted. However, his assesment of the coaching in Stillwater is not kind and I don't know that many others will disagree.

David Hale:

Georgia essentially went with just three wide receivers the entire game, which no doubt took its toll. Moore said he took 55 snaps alone, but more troubling was the reaction from his coach, who Moore said didn't realize that Brown, Wooten and Troupe had been absent.

I'm not going to pin this on Tony Ball without talking to him first, but if the coaches really weren't aware that they had only used three wide receivers, that is a serious problem.

Aaron White: "We have a lot more that we could throw out there. I feel like a lot of our weapons on offense weren't completely utilized to their potential."

But when it comes to illustrating just how bad the coaching was in this game, I think these two quotes sum it up best.

The first, from Coach A: "Earlier in the game (we) should have varied what (we) did and tried to open it up a little more. We wanted to establish the run and ball control and it started out well, and it just came down to execution and (we) didn’t do a very good job of spreading it out or spreading the field.”
The second, from Coach B: "I felt like (we) didn’t give (Samuel) enough chance to make plays. We really felt like he’s a playmaker and we wanted to give him 25-plus carries. I don’t know what we ended up with, but not enough.”

Now, you're probably reading those quotes and getting a little concerned that there's a clear rift in the philosophy of two of Georgia's offensive coaches. Rightly so. Clearly one guy favors featuring the run, while the other guy thinks that the reliance on the run prevented Georgia from opening things up and stretching the field.

To have two coaches disagree so fundamentally would be concerning. What's even more concerning, however, is that both of those quotes came from Mike Bobo following the game.

And on the cramping and IV's:
I got this email from a reader named John, who was sitting just two rows up in the stands: "It wasn't that hot! I had about 8 beers before the game and only drank one cup of sprite durning the game."

Sturdivant Gone

In what has to be some of the saddest news to come out of Butts-Mehre in a while, Trinton Sturdivant tore the same ACL as he did in August of 2008. His season is over and possibly his career as well. He was the Valedictorian of his HS class. He was a Freshman All-American in '07 and a sinch to be an NFL draftee. His loss will hurt tremendously on the O-line but the circumstances around an injury like this makes that seem pretty irrelevant. DGD!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Bunger

We here at OIA extend our warmest birthday wishes to fellow blogger, Patrick "Weazle" Bunger. I met Pat about 10 years ago during the summer on Tybee. One of the oldest memories I have involving Pat is the 4th of July when he slept on the tile floor downstairs of my house with a pizza box as a pillow. The rest is history.

Top 5 about Bunger:

1: Humor
Sometimes the thought of someone is hilarious, but it's not so funny when you are actually with the person. Other times you don't realize how funny someone is until you actually hang out with them for a while. It's different with Bunger. The thought of Bunger downing tequila shots at Wind Rose is great, but actually seeing him wrestling crocks in his speedo on the beach is pretty damn funny too.

2: Culture
Bunger was there for the great culture debate after all. And his Yankee blood with his Southern roots help make him the interesting human that he is.

3: Loyal
While P Bung has been known to leave a voice mail or two, you can't fault him for being shady or anything when it comes to hanging out. If he's going to do something, he just does it, and he doesn't hand you any BS. And while I do not believe him to be any sort of fashion aficionado, he is pretty dead on when it comes to friends and relationships. I remember him having my back and telling it like it was when I was a freshman in high school and walked into Boone's house to find my then-chickenhead and Boone making funny noises. Also, when Bunger has too much wine and burns a hole in your shirt with a cigarette, he is quick to apologize in the morning. Bunger= definitely not a TOB'er.

5: Nicknames
Have a look at Bunger's phone. No idea who anyone is. And he has about 10 nicknames himself. Baseline Bunger, P Bung, Weazle, Croc Hunter, etc. Regardless of what he calls you or you call him, he's a good guy. A strong personality for sure, but I'll always consider him one of my closest buds.

...And You Thought That "I'm Georgia" Thing Was Bad

Apparently Oklahoma State is going to debut a new pre-game song and video on Saturday, and it's safe to say the fans aren't too happy about it.

This is like Georgia playing that travesty of a Corey Smith song (I refuse to even link to it) before the South Carolina game. Except that this Oklahoma State song is infinitely better, while terrible in its own way.

Money quote:

"He tells me, ‘I just wanted to let you know that my wife is pregnant and I will not let her hear this song because I’m worried that it will kill my unborn child,’” said Martin, who might be one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet. "Somebody actually wrote that. I couldn’t even make that up.”

Robinson Doubtful?

I'm not sure if there is a whole lot to this but boy would it be a game changer. EDSBS has a link on their website referencing that Oklahoma St. starting QB Zac Robinson may be doubtful for Saturday's game with Georgia due to an undisclosed injury.

This report may or may not hold water. I just can't believe, if it is true, something like this hasn't leaked out somewhere. Regardless, this has been a weird week. I think the Pokes are feeling the heat a little bit. Hell, Gundy is worried about a brawl before the game. They have had a starter leave the team this week, another starter lost for the season because of injury, and another star player arrested. Now this Zac Robinson undisclosed injury thing. I know he had a hamstring problem earlier in camp. I'm sure something will break soon one way or the other. One would have to think though that all of these distractions favor the Bulldogs.

BC: No other place like it

One of my mom's brothers went to BC. That's about it for the whole tradition thing in my family. Anyways, he moved to Maryland a while back and started a family. Andrew, my little cousin, comes to Savannah every summer. He thinks BC is the greatest thing in the world.

A lot of people are worried about the state of BC right now. A win over Windsor helps, but I still get the feeling that a lot of people are still uneasy about BC and its future.

My 16 year old cousin who lives in Baltimore, Maryland and has never even seen a BC game told me last night in a Facebook-chat,"I want to get my dad fired from his job so we can move down there just so i can play for bc".

Shit doesn't happen anywhere else. We will be fine. Go Cadets!

TE-per-BOW-le, Part 1

We all know that the Tim Tebow slobber-fest is going to reach a fever pitch this college football season, likely to the point where we look back on Thom Brennamen's BCS title game love letter with some degree of fondness. I mean, why else would Dan Shanoff go to the trouble of creating this monstrosity?

So of course I'm taking it upon myself to document some of the more egregious examples of Tebow love over the next few months. Not any of the legitimate praise, which the guy deserves plenty of (he's surely the best player in college football, after all). I'm just looking to call people out for going too far over the top (hence the name of this feature. See what I did there?).

Choice Cuts, BC Over Windsor

Another solid effort from everyone's favorite Internet radio team. Not quite as much entertainment as the region basketball game, but things really started coming together in the post-game.

The Real Dawg Duo?

No, I am not talking about Bliss and Holland. And maybe they aren't the real Dawg Duo, but Holland and Sheahan are awesome. I can't make it to the game tonight, but that's fine because I get to listen to Holland get excited and Sheahan hammer the officials. Will field goals result in Sheahan's patented "BINGO!"? Who knows, but I can't wait to find out.

Glory Days (Warning: Way too long)

Friday I will play for the fourth team in my flag football career. Of course, I started my career as a member of the Wild Stallions, whom I will consider myself a part of until the day I die. One night junior year I came to the Boro and played a game with Andrew and Shane's team. When I was the only one left in Athens last fall, besides Schiv who was in law school, I joined the team of Cavalaliers, Saints, and Dave Bliss. Now, I am set to join the Shar-dets. (Combination of Sharks and Cadets).

Last year the Shar-dets, who were then known as TapOut, made the semi-finals in the C division, so we should be pretty good with the addition of myself and PLowe. Some of my new horsemen, including Jonathan "Ric" Williams, Tyler Crawford, and Travis Williams are on the team. Even my gas brother's brother, Cameron Dixon, is on the team. And we've got the Janufka twins who are good guys. So I've got some of my new horsemen and one of my best friends on my team. Should be fun, right?

I couldn't be less excited about Friday. I don't know if it's the fact that I am playing center while Dixon and the Janufkas are the receivers or the fact that I don't get to play defense at all, but I am just not feeling it.

To be honest though, playing with the Cavs, Saints, and Bliss in Athens wasn't much fun either. Playing with the Stallions was awesome. Maybe it's just that I was with a lot of my best friends, or that I got to play the positions I wanted, but it was damn awesome.

Rick wore under armor long before it was popular. He ran the defense, and we blitzed enough to make BVG and Muschamp's defenses look like soft zones. Holland ran the offense. He was quick enough to be an effective scrambler and run the option, but he had the arm-strength and accuracy to throw the ball whenever we needed/wanted to. He also knows more about football/flag football than anyone else I know so I didn't mind listening to him when he told me we couldn't throw it up to me on every play.

Larry and Patrick didn't allow a sack in 3 seasons. And when it came time to drop one over the middle, they caught it. The few personal fouls we received for their comments to the refs were well worth it.

And speaking of personal fouls, Wolfe set the tone the first time he scored and spun the ball in the endzone. But it was fun to play with Tony. He was a great possession receiver. He suffered through a few injuries, but shit happens. And the duck he threw to end one of our seasons still makes me LOL.

Jack's roommate, Rand, was a lockdown corner. He was good. And say what you want about Hotard, but he got after it. Doan came on board later, but he didn't really do much, except screw up our special teams.

In conclusion, I don't know what exactly it was that made playing with the Wild Stallions so awesome. But I miss the hell out of it. It was awesome, and we were awesome. I hope this flag football will be fun, but I know it won't compare to any of the seasons I had with the Stallions.

Tailgate CD

The 2009 Tailgate CD is in the works. Once again the powers at be are allowing all contributors to OIA to nominate 1 song to be put on the compilation.

This years CD will have a more contemporary feel with less of the old favorites. On that same note, "Land Down Under" will officially be retired prior to the Georgia vs. Oklahoma State game.

DeFilippis in the News

B.C graduate A.J. DeFilippis (hard name to spell) was in the SMN today. Coach spoke very highly of him.

DeFillipis on being the #1 QB during spring practice:

"It helped a lot," DeFilippis said. "I got more experience. It doesn't really matter how talented a person is. Experience will kill them if they don't have it. I feel that I got a lot of experience, and I feel better coming into camp because I got more experience."

Rich McGowan

This guy is from Michigan but he has done a really good job since coming to the SMN a couple of years ago. It seems as if he really likes his job unlike some of the high school reporters that preceded him. Being from outside this area he has even brought to light some of the shortcomings of high schools in this area. Here is his blog from BC practice yesterday morning.

Top 5 Georgia athlete ever, Gordon Beckham, was named the American League Rookie of the Month for July. Beckham has settled into the 2 hole for the contending White Sox and some are considering him a front runner for rookie of the year.
He will surely hit a skid at some point but I don't think anyone thought this much success would come this soon. He is currently one of two players from the 2007 draft in the majors.

The combination of Beckham, Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, and the Braves not making the playoffs again make the White Sox my new favorite team.
