Glory Days (Warning: Way too long)

Friday I will play for the fourth team in my flag football career. Of course, I started my career as a member of the Wild Stallions, whom I will consider myself a part of until the day I die. One night junior year I came to the Boro and played a game with Andrew and Shane's team. When I was the only one left in Athens last fall, besides Schiv who was in law school, I joined the team of Cavalaliers, Saints, and Dave Bliss. Now, I am set to join the Shar-dets. (Combination of Sharks and Cadets).

Last year the Shar-dets, who were then known as TapOut, made the semi-finals in the C division, so we should be pretty good with the addition of myself and PLowe. Some of my new horsemen, including Jonathan "Ric" Williams, Tyler Crawford, and Travis Williams are on the team. Even my gas brother's brother, Cameron Dixon, is on the team. And we've got the Janufka twins who are good guys. So I've got some of my new horsemen and one of my best friends on my team. Should be fun, right?

I couldn't be less excited about Friday. I don't know if it's the fact that I am playing center while Dixon and the Janufkas are the receivers or the fact that I don't get to play defense at all, but I am just not feeling it.

To be honest though, playing with the Cavs, Saints, and Bliss in Athens wasn't much fun either. Playing with the Stallions was awesome. Maybe it's just that I was with a lot of my best friends, or that I got to play the positions I wanted, but it was damn awesome.

Rick wore under armor long before it was popular. He ran the defense, and we blitzed enough to make BVG and Muschamp's defenses look like soft zones. Holland ran the offense. He was quick enough to be an effective scrambler and run the option, but he had the arm-strength and accuracy to throw the ball whenever we needed/wanted to. He also knows more about football/flag football than anyone else I know so I didn't mind listening to him when he told me we couldn't throw it up to me on every play.

Larry and Patrick didn't allow a sack in 3 seasons. And when it came time to drop one over the middle, they caught it. The few personal fouls we received for their comments to the refs were well worth it.

And speaking of personal fouls, Wolfe set the tone the first time he scored and spun the ball in the endzone. But it was fun to play with Tony. He was a great possession receiver. He suffered through a few injuries, but shit happens. And the duck he threw to end one of our seasons still makes me LOL.

Jack's roommate, Rand, was a lockdown corner. He was good. And say what you want about Hotard, but he got after it. Doan came on board later, but he didn't really do much, except screw up our special teams.

In conclusion, I don't know what exactly it was that made playing with the Wild Stallions so awesome. But I miss the hell out of it. It was awesome, and we were awesome. I hope this flag football will be fun, but I know it won't compare to any of the seasons I had with the Stallions.

10-6.

I watched Varsity Blues before everyone one of our games. I'll also never forget laughing during that pregame prayer in the playoffs against county crew. That may have sealed our fate. My bad. I think there was an incident after that game, during the post game handshake, where some roid rager on that team wanted to fight me right there on the spot after some comment I made to him. Of course that could have been another game, or multiple other games for that matter. The gassers during preseason practices were awesome. Then there was that time I gave a blitzing linebacker a knee to the balls because I thought he took a cheap shot at Holland the play before. Turns out, after the game, Holland told me he went down on purpose to try and draw a flag. Oh well, sucks for that guy. I'll never forget the Wolfe pass ever, or the fact that as soon as he let it go Bell and myself, standing in the endzone, turned towards eachother and simultaneously said "oh shit." There were countless other memories but those are just off the top of my head. Good times.

One more thing, as this debate raged on for years: Stallions would beat any flag football team assembled in Statesboro. Period. End of discussion.

What was Holland's line to that guy on juice- welcome to the party, baby?

Slic Ric said...

I think he said "I like this kind of party." There was a commercial out at that time where some football player said that I think.

Reardon will verify that outcome.

Despite the tough luck we had in softball, pound for pound I'd say the Diamond Stallions were a little better top to 2nd last from bottom.

Charlie Dodson said...

Who do you think the worst player on our softball team was? No one really stuck out...

Denny said...

my gsc team would have beat yall

Charlie Dodson said...

Yeah, maybe in softball.

(They both like to take off their pants, too.)

we had better athletes..period. and D, let me know if yall want someone to come up and play some downs with yall..i loved playing up there.

sauers6 said...

and a quicker offense, plus a pretty scappy D. period

sauers6 said...

scappy=scrappy..apologies

Slic Ric said...

Bullshit. Besides, Hotard would have had the plays blown up before your "better" athletes could do anything. That scrappy D wouldn't know how to handle Holland's ever expanding playbook either.

Charlie Dodson said...

Andrew, we might need you this weekend.

The only thing I'll say about having better "athletes" is that the team I played on with Bliss and those guys probably had better "athletes" than we had on the Stallions. However, the Stallions would have beaten their asses. Running the right offense and football knowledge make a big difference.

Shane, where is your typical comment about Southern having better intramurals in general because all we play against is white guys and yall played against more black people?

PMac said...

Yea running the right offense and having God on your side makes a HUGE difference. We had the better athletes and that team straight out beat our ass in the playoffs.

sauers6 said...

ok..your right.. every successful flag football team needs is a coach or person that knows what plays to run in what situations and so forth. but doesn't mean we wouldnt win. because we had talent in every aspect of the game...even special teams,,,,we had shelton..haha punting was the only thing that we would let him do.
D, if you can get me an ID then i'll be up there in a heartbeat.

Charlie Dodson said...

Yall definitely have us on special teams then, especially once we picked up Doan, and he really screwed things up.

I'll call you tomorrow when we find out our schedule.

Shane said...

GSU has more black people. Black people are better athletes.

I would have said it earlier I just was afraid that having a disagreeing opinion would only land me accusations that I was trying to prove how much more I knew about GSU intramurals. By the way that is NOT what my intentions are in posting this. I can not make that clear enough!!

Charlie Dodson said...

I'm still waiting to see proof that GSU intramurals are better than UGA intramurals.

I played in C division last semester at Southern and the competition was nowhere close to the C division or UGLY division at Georgia. The worst of UGA > the worst of GSU.

And 2 years ago our intramural team, the 2nd best intramural basketball team at Georgia, beat Southern's best basketball team by 20. Georgia's best intramural basketball team won the entire tourney with teams there from throughout the Southeast. UGA's best > GSU's best.

So I guess GSU has UGA in the middle. Having less than half the people to draw from as UGA does, that seems likely.

From what I've seen, flag football looks about even. Softball, which is dominated by white guys, is actually where GSU looks to have a clear advantage.

Charlie Dodson said...

UGA: ~14,000 Males
~1000 Black
~10,000 White Males
~3000 "other?"

GSU: ~8700 Males
~1700 Black Males
~6,000 White Males
~1000 "other?"

SO you're telling me that UGA(5300 more guys than Southern,1300 more non-white guys than Southern) has less athletes than GSU because GSU has 700 more black guys than UGA does?

I see your point.

sauers6 said...

quality not quantity

Pl0we said...

wow i have not seen this many comments in a long time

Charlie Dodson said...

I agree with that, Andrew. But all Shane is saying that GSU intramurals are better because there are MORE black people at GSU than there are at Georgia. So is more better, or is more not better, or is more not necessarily better?

PMac said...

More Zulus is never a good thing Mr. Bell. I'll just leave it at that.

Shane said...

"SO you're telling me that UGA...has less athletes than GSU because GSU has 700 more black guys than UGA does?"

Nice statistics. Im sorry I may not have made myself clear in the first comment.

What I was trying to say is:
"GSU has more black people. Black people are better athletes."

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Shane said...

That might be a ridiculous point.

But, if I am not mistaken, your point is that one year UGA's best was better than GSU's best and UGA's worst was better than GSU worst (which is based on your completely unbiased opinion).

According to what you say here, you must believe that GT has a better athletic program than UGA? For Christ sake, last year they won in football and basketball (the best and worst of UGA major sports).

I dont believe that and I am somewhat confident you dont either.

Charlie Dodson said...

Gymnastics is our best sport. And volleyball is our worst.

I was saying that A-league in Athens is better than A-league in Statesboro. This is based on our 2 best teams my last year being better than Southern's two best teams.

The team I made it to the quarterfinals of C-league last year in Statesboro would not have made it past the first round of the playoffs in C-league in Athens.

My point was that the majority of the people play in B-league and since we have many more people to draw from, then B-league in Athens is probably better than B-league in Statesboro.

And while I do have a biased opinion, I have, at least, something to base my thoughts on: my team, the 2nd best team in Athens beat the shit out of the best team in Statesboro. Is that not true? What evidence do you have?

Pl0we said...

boom boom pow

Shane said...

"I was saying that A-league in Athens is better than A-league in Statesboro. This is based on our 2 best teams my last year being better than Southern's two best teams."

Let me get this straight because your team (the second best team at UGA) beat the best team at GSU in one game, UGA's 2 best teams are better than GSU 2 best teams? It doesnt sound like a fact to me-- more like an opinion. Maybe I am missing something but the second best team at UGA beating the first best team at GSU IN ONE GAME doesnt mean that UGA's two best teams are better than GSU's two best teams

"The team I (sic) made it to the quarterfinals of C-league last year in Statesboro would not have made it past the first round of the playoffs in C-league in Athens."

Another opinion.

So basically, your "evidence" that UGA's entire intramural program is better than GSU's entire intramural program is based off one basketball game?

And, no, I don't have any evidence that GSU's intramural program is better than UGA's. I simply said that black people are better athletes.

Charlie Dodson said...

Our team beat Southern's team.

Charlie Dodson said...

No no. I was just talking about basketball.

See previous comment:

"From what I've seen, flag football looks about even. Softball, which is dominated by white guys, is actually where GSU looks to have a clear advantage."

That being said, I think the Wild Stallions would beat any team Shane has ever been on.

Kinda like how the class of '03 dominated the class of '04 in the 2009 "Only in America" Bowl?

Your right, Jack is a great qp with great football knowledge. That is the reason Will set the line on Your Mother at only (-4.5)

I think "you're" digging now, Shane.
