Bilas Calls NCAA Tournament Expansion 'Inevitable'

Couldn't decide whether to go with this title or 'Bilas Most Cynical Sports Analyst Ever?' or just plain out 'Bilas is an Asshole'.

Anyway, he does kind of have a point.

A couple comments:

I won't ever complain about MORE college basketball. Regardless of whether it is 'meaningless' or not. MLB season-- even in the eyes of MLB fans-- is too long and that doesn't stop people from liking it. The crappy teams will be eliminated in the first round, just like the 16 seeds.

The set-up looked kind of cool with the top eight teams getting first round buys.

The whole move is about $$$, which might not be a bad thing. My only question is 'How will fans respond?'. The games this year have appeared to have been far from sold out. In fact, on numerous occasion I saw lower level seats empty. Will fans travel for the extra game? My solution is to move these games to actual basketball gyms!!

The tournament would likely only let in more teams from big conferences. If you finish 8th in your conference, do you really deserve to play for the national championship. On the otherhand, is this tournament really about finding the best team in the country. Other sports (see NBA basketball, MLB baseball, and NHL hockey) do a better job of finding the best team.

I will probably have more later. Did I miss anything?

The 2006-07 season was my favorite college basketball season ever. It might have been Felton's best team and every single game mattered. Georgia was on Joe Lunardi's bubble a majorty of the season and more than half the home games were sold out. Thats sayin somehing in Athens.

With a 96 team field Georgia would have been in at the begining of February. UNC would have been in this year (go check out their hitlist).

I understand that its about money and by adding 31 teams you get double the amount of games and only have 1 more round. But the idea of debating on whether the #12team in the Big East should get in is absolutely rediculous. The damn tournament is too big now. You don't win your conference??? Screw you then. You weren't the best team over an actual season for 4 months out of just 12 teams. Why the hell do you think you sould get a chance to be better than 64. The conference tournaments are the beginning of the NCAA tourney, its just that the money goes in a different direction.

Its going to happen and the tournament will still be great. But college basketball is going to be nothing but 4 months of spring training. Look at this years Final 4. Everyone is surprised with two 5 seeds in Indianapolis. Look back at the preseason polls, all 4 teams left were in the Top 10. They just waited until the season started to begin trying.

It looks like they're going to do it.

Personally, I don't really care because the tournament is already terrible at determining the best team in the country.

Given that, I'm not going to complain about getting to watch more basketball.

Bilas is a jackass.

I love the way the tournament is now. I wish they wouldn't change it.

Tell Devan Downey that the regular season doesn't matter.

GTP is a top 5 blog, but I don't see the need to repeatedly compare college basketball and college football in terms of determining a champion and making the regular "matter".

It's all about the Benjamins, baby.

They need to change it to a playoff system: 16 teams, best of five.
