College Football Thoughts/Questions

Why did ESPN just have a 30-minute discussion about whether Alabama is going to have trouble “turning its attention to Texas”? It's the m-f'ing national championship game.

If I had told you in August that Georgia would have as good a season as USC and Oklahoma, you'd have taken it, right?

Boise State-TCU in the Fiesta is complete b.s. Also, someone convince me TCU wasn't the best team in the country during the regular season.

McCoy and Tebow were unworthy of going to the Heisman ceremony before yesterday. Is there a chance in hell that either one of them doesn't end up there, if not win it? Hopefully Ndamukong Suh at least gets some votes. Guy is unbelievable.

Bo Pelini needs to say screw it and hire one of Tech's offensive assistants.

As for the SEC championship, all I'll say is this:

Not the best college football season in recent memory in my opinion. Not looking forward to any of these matchups other than the national championship. It kills me that Iowa made a BCS game. What a crock of shit.

Suh!

Most f'd up season in history. Bottom line. To think I waited 9 months for this shit and have to wait another 9 to hopefully make everything right again. Ugh. Disgusted, absolutely disgusted. Hook 'em!

I admire Brian Kelly's honesty on this ESPN interview right now. Seems like an alright dude, and I kind of hope Notre Dame hires him.

And a serious question: other than Georgia royally sucking, what was so bad about this season?

Slic Ric said...

I'll list a few:

1)Bama in the national championship game
2) SEC referee conspiracy
3) CPC:(
4) Georgia Tech in Orange Bowl (I know we beat them, still kind of sucks though)
5) 2 big ten teams in BCS bowls- they shouldn't have 1 let alone 2

I could go on and on and that's without complaining about how seriously f'd Georgia is.

Barstool69 said...

Please tell me the ONLY reason you are rooting for TX is to spite Bama.

Cause I think TX folks are a bunch of obnoxious a-holes who think they are god's gift.

I can see where you're coming from, Slic. But you've still got to be happy for your boy Fender, not to mention the 'Bama Beauties.

This is ridiculous. I think fans of both TCU and Boise State should boycott the Fiesta Bowl and have them play in an empty stadium. 1) that would get the nations attention 2) the idiots at the Fiesta Bowl will lose money. Who wouldn't have wanted a TCU vs Florida or a BSU vs Iowa? It's insulting, so we should insult them back. The BCS only understands money. Boycott the Cop-Out Bowl!

PMac said...

I agree the matchups aren't great, but suggesting BSU vs Iowa is a joke. I'd never watch that game. Iowa shouldn't be in the BCS period.

1. Its been said before and it will be said a million more times but the BCS is a royal failure. It always has been and not only does it not accomplish what it set out to do but it makes the entire CFB post season a joke. Go back to the old system if nothing else.

2. TCU and Boise should be beyond pissed. The winner will not gain anymore respect than they do or don't have right now. That game is completely irrelevant and its the BCS fault.

3. Alabama and Texas will be good. But Alabama will win. I don't care how much ESPN tells Bama they are better, they will win.

4. Why is nobody even questioning the fact that Cincy is getting no shot?? Look at their season in a conference that could be the 3rd best in the country. If Oklahoma State was in Texas' spot, I guarantee there would be an uprising of support for Cincy. I love CFB but this aspect of the sport is a joke.

5. The season was not the best but it will never be bad. Yesterday alone would prevent the season from being bad.

6. C.J. Spiller is the best player in the country! He won't win the Heisman because the trophy not always goes to the best player in the nation anymore.

7. Saban is a helluva coach and is right a majority of the time. But the dude is a true asshole.

Slic Ric said...

That true asshole is about to have his second crystal ball. Nice guys finish last.

JJBA said...

I don't care. I would never want someone like that being associated with Georgia.

Barstool69 said...

I'm so sick of the "I'd rather have a nice guy coach than an ass" argument. I'd rather have a winner, period. Who the hell cares what he's like? Let our University president, AD or some other person be a nice guy. I want our coach to be a winner and caretaker of the program and that's it.

I never said there weren't good guys that are winners, just as you never said there weren't a-holes that were good winners...so I don't see the point in listing them.

My belief is that the importance of a coach's personal qualities has been overstated. I want a winner first and a nice guy second.

JJBA said...

I understand and you are right to an extent. I just wouldn't want the figurehead of Georgia being a jerk. And in 90% of the SEC the football coach is it.

Slic Ric said...

Barstool, can't believe I agree with you but you're spot on. JH, love ya dawg, but I think it's real easy to take the stance you're taking now because that's the reality and that's the position we're in. However, let's say the shoe's on the other foot. What if CUM or CNS were Georgia's head coach and consequently we a) won 2 national championships in the last 4 years or b)we haven't lost a regular season game in 2 years and are playing Texas for the 2009 MNC? How would you honestly feel about our dick of a head coach then? I know you're not gonna change your answer but I think you're just lying to yourself. Like Schiv said, win first, nice second. If we were winning like Florida or Alabama everybody in Bulldog Nation would find a way to accept our asshole head coaches and defend them against every criticism. Winning covers up a lot.

Barstool69 said...

Glad we see eye to eye on something, Slic.

I do want to make the point that I recognize the difference in a coach that's a jerk and one that hurts the program because he's a jerk. If an asshole coach is winning games but he is doing it in a way that will eventually subject the program to inner turmoil, destruction from within, or NCAA sanctions then he's a bad coach first, asshole second.

I just can't support choosing one coach over another based on their attitude and not their ability to win.

Charlie Dodson said...

Lloyd Carr was nice, and he won a national championship.

Mangino was an asshole, and he was a decent coach.

CPJ is a prick, and he's a great coach.

Being mean/nice doesn't make you a good/bad coach.

Cody didn't block that FG against Tenn because he was scared of Saban. Kiffin didn't pucker because he was afraid of Saban being mean to him.

The refs screwed up that Arkansas game because they are bad refs, not because Meyer says bad words to them.

Tony Wilson dropped the pass against SC because it was a tough catch, not because he knew that CMR would pat him on the back regardless.

Robert Edwards or whoever wouldn't have caught that ball against Florida in 2002 if Saban or Meyer or Paul Johnson would have been his coach.

Meyer, Saban, and Johnson are good coaches because they recruit well and/or run outstanding offenses/defenses. I just don't see how any of them are that much better than CMR.

You're kidding yourself if you think it's coaching ability, rather than a few breaks along the way that separates Meyer/Saban from Richt.

Yes, they have won MNC's, and Richt has not, yet. What FSU did with Richt calling the plays was unprecedented in the history of Florida State and we all know how they've been since he left. So far what he's done at Georgia has been as good if not better than any period of time in Georgi'a history.

I know right now it looks like Florida and Bama have pulled away, but I remember in January of last year we were laughing about Florida losing to Michigan in the Capital One Bowl and Bama capping a season that included a loss to Louisiana Monroe.

We have something special in CMR: great coach, not going anywhere, and not gonna embarass us with recruiting violations/other bs.

I'll take him over CPJ, CNS, and CNS any day of the week- even right now when it's not real easy to do so.

10-6.

Barstool69 said...

this is off topic, but when are people going to start posting the "top 5s of the decade"?

I'll take him over CPJ, CNS, and CUM I mean.

Great response. I'm not saying they're only winning games because of their asshole demeanor. You're right that Richt being a nice guy had nothing to do with Terrence and Tony dropping those passes, with both drops potentially keeping Georgia out of 2 national championship games, MNC games I feel like Georgia would have definitely won. There's CMR's 2 crystal balls right there. You're also right in saying that Saban and Meyer aren't that much better than Richt. That being said, they are better. They've got the hardware to prove it, lucky or not. The biggest difference I see between the 3 right now is attitude. Meyer and Saban demand excellence from their coaches and players whereas Richt, until this year, didn't want to step on anyone's toes. It comes down to work ethic. That permeates every part of the program from recruiting to strength and conditioning to gameday preparations. It's that killer instinct that puts Meyer and Saban over the hump and SLIGHTLY ahead of Richt. Just going through the motions isn't going to get in done in the country's toughest conference. If Georgia was in one of the easier conferences they certainly would have played for a title by now. In CMR's defense though, I can't see Saban and Meyer staying at their respective schools for 10 years. If they do, then we'll be able to see if they run into the complacency problem that Georgia currently faces.

For the record though, I would like to say bringing in this new coaching blood is a step back in the right direction. That coupled with everybody Florida and Tennessee are losing next year, if Murray can have a decent year there is no reason Georgia shouldn't win the east next year and compete for a crystal ball in 2011.

Still one guy to rid of though: Van Halanger.

I'm not saying they'll all come to fruition, but I got some Top 5 ideas for sure.

I hope y'all do, too.
