The 184th St. Patrick's Day Parade

Most, if not all of you, will find this irrrelevant at this point in time but it was brought to my attention and thought it was important and very interesting. The 183rd St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah will be held on its traditional date of March 17th in 2007. On years when March 17th falls on a Sunday it is standard procedure for the parade to be held on the 16th. Sunday is being skipped next year and the 17th will fall on a Monday in 2008. However, Easter will be on March 23rd in 2008. So for the first time since 1913 St. Patrick's Day occurs during Holy Week. Recently Bishop Boland has stated that the 2008 parade will most likely take place on Friday March 14th to accomodate the conflict.-- For those who will be enrolled in college courses in 2008, a majority of schools including the University of Georgia resume classes following spring break on March 17th.

This is the right move for two reasons.

1. Tradition...The protocol for Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade says the parade will alway be held on March 17, unless that day falls on a Sunday or during Holy Week. I believe this is what validates our parade and places us on a pedastal that only New York can touch. Boston, Chicago and Philly all hold their parades on the weekend.

2. Economics...A weekend parade will likely bring in at least 50% more revenue than a Monday parade will. I don't understand why the bishop selected Friday, March 14, though. Saturday is the ideal day. The decision ultimately lies with the Parade Committee and I think/hope you will see the 184th edition of Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade parade on Saturday, March 15, 2008.

I'm confused about when our Spring Break will be. Is it the week of the parade or the week after?

This year it is March 10-18. In 2008 its March 8-16.
