It's Not Sixteen Titles, But Still Pretty Good

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Suzanne Yoculan and the Georgia Gym Dogs, on behalf of America (or at least the Southeast), for what they did this weekend. Not only did they win their third (!) consecutive national title, but they also prevented Florida from winning yet another championship in the process.

Had the Gators secured yet another national title on Friday night, we surely would've heard all about it on Sportscenter: "Hey, did you hear Florida won ANOTHER championship over the weekend? Are you sure Ohio State didn't make the Super Six? LOLOL" But the Gym Dogs won't get any national publicity of note, even as they continue to dominate their sport in a way few programs have ever done. Three straight national championships without any seniors competing at any of the final meets. Unbelievable.

The Passing of a Legend

For those who attended St. James School or are a member of the parish, this will take on significant meaning. Bobby "Mr. Mac" McBride passed away on Sunday in Savannah. Mr. Mac dedicated much of his time to St. James School and athletics for more than 30 years. He coached generations of St. James students in every sport, including some members of this blog as well as many of our family members. He was involved in almost every aspect of the parish but was most known for his tireless efforts with the student-athletes. The football field at St. James is named in his honor, a scholarship fund is in his name, and the City of Savannah presented him with the honor of Coach Bobby McBride Day. Many would say he has been the most beloved and significant figure at SJS since the doors to the school opened. He will be sorely missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Bryan and the entire McBride family.

Favorite Pitch, Best Swing

As Georgia's baseball team flounders, BC is coming on strong. The baseball team started slow and has faced injuries throughout the year. Yesterday, the Cadets handed Calvary Day School their 2nd loss of the year taking the contest 3-0. This coming just a week after a 12-2 victory over region leading South Effingham. The good play has put BC back in the playoff picture. With a win against Burke County this Friday, the Cadets will qualify for the region playoffs and a chance to advance to the state playoffs.

The Golf team will compete at the Region tournament today. BC has had a great year to this point including team victories at the City Championship, Savannah Christian Invitational, and numerous head-to-head matches.

The tennis team travels to Lagrange tomorrow to compete in the 1st round of the State tournament after finishing 3rd in Region 3-AAA and a 2nd place finish at the Coastal Empire Tournament.

The region track qualifying meet is Friday and BC has seen a revitalization of sorts from the track team. With a solid 4x100 team, good distance running, and good performances in the jumping events, the track team has found some measurable success.

Bell v. Maher

I said it would happen, and it happened. Leighton and I decided to take the next step in our relationship. We had a fight, a real fight. And even though he's an awful fighter, I think we'll be fine. So what's the big deal? Doesn't Leighton get in fights every weekend? I think he does, but I would like to discuss and break down the dynamics of Bell v. Maher

Point A: On this very blog, I did predict a fight between Leighton and myself. So I went down there looking for a fight right? In actuality, I realized that there were many people there who I'd had past issues with so I decided to play it cool and not be the kid who got in 4 separate fights. I said absolutely nothing to Leighton all night until I said, " Yall are out; Yall are out; It's the rules. Rules are rules." Then he came at me. And it wasn't much of a fight. But that was just the beginning.

B: Well it's his house so I shouldn't screw with him in the first place.

1: I didn't screw with him.

2: He had people over and made them pay to drink and be in Beerfest. Without our participation and money, there'd be no beerfest.

C: Everyone turned into a bunch of little girls. It's a stupid little wrestling match and as soon as we got off the ground then it should have been over and done with. If I had really wanted to knock his ass out, I would have done so. If he would have really wanted to get maybe one shot in, then he could have endured the beating and surely brushed my face with one hit. Neither of us really wanted to fight; he just felt like he had to.

D: From what I gather, everyone who lives with Leighton is known for having bad tempers. You'd think they'd be better fighters if they got in so many fights. But it's obvious that they'll only fight when they must; John Patton is the most hostile guy I've ever come across. He def deserved Chad's assault. What am I getting at here? It's obvious that these guys are out to prove that they are just badasses. Of course, they aren't. I've seen one play basketball, one try to fight me, and one yell at his girlfriend; they are all women. So while I might have predicted a fight between myself and Leighton, it was HIM who was and always is looking for a fight. Before too long, he'll find one with someone who can fight and wants to fight, and that'll be the last time he ever goes out looking for fights.

E: I was kind of pissed at Leighton's roommates for taking his side, when, in my mind, they were just ignoring the facts and the sensible way of looking at it. Shane chose to look at it from both sides. And I got pissed and walked to P Lowe's about 3am without a shirt on. I'm special. But really I guess I was just pissed because, believe it or not, after 7 hours of drinking, people overreacted and took sides.

F: If there would not have been a Bell v. Maher, there would have been a Maher v. someone.

THE week in review

Monday

One sad individual takes the lives of over 30 people at Virginia Tech. The best thing that I've heard or read about the entire situation was written by the Southern Discomfort guy in one of our campus newspapers.

Tuesday

I did not end up at Topper's with Charlie.

Wednesday

Me and Larry run into the Ryan Gibson at Little Italy. That place has good, big pieces of pizza for not a lot of money. They also have cheap pitchers of beer. I think a slice of hamburger with a pitcher of Bud Light was only $6.66.

Thursday

I made the drive to the Boro by myself. Shane, P Lowe, and myself had a relaxing night at Dingus McGee's. There's another one in Seattle.

Friday

I decided to go home Friday so I could have a relaxing night in my own bed. Things went a little different. It started about 3 when I rode by Stingray's and saw Gibson having brunch. After pounding drinks and winning 50 bucks at Bingo, I ventured to see Schivera, his hand breaking friend, and the lady of my dreams. This is where it gets fuzzy. I think it went well with her. I woke up naked and with her number in my phone. Problem is that I wet my pants, and my mom hates me now. Oh well, I guess Schiv can have MJ. If it would have worked out, then I guess she wouldn't have been my "dream girl" anymore. AWWWWWWWWWWWW

Saturday

Beerfest!!! Basically, our team of P Lowe, Rooks, and O'Hayer sucked and we were out as soon as a team could possibly be out. I got to see some cool guys and gals that I usually don't get to see, so it was really cool. I can't believe Shelton's team of himself, Stephen Bruce, A Sauers, and P Sauers did not win. Shit, they might have, I don't know. It went about as expected. And oh yeah me and Leighton got in a little fight.

Home Stretch

As the semester comes to a close, its a little disappointing to see the Georgia baseball team having such a down year. One of the best programs at the University for the past 4 years will not be providing any heroic performances in Atlanta or late inning comebacks in Athens during the month of June. As bad as Georgia has been for most of the year I had not heard any giving up from coach Perno, until tonight. In his post game interview after the loss to Tech, Coach Perno admitted that the team might just be too young to compete and many of the younger players will get more playing time the rest of the season in hopes of developing for next year. What was more surprising was a statement he made about the program as a whole. Siting the 2005 recruiting class as "significantly poor," he believes the program is in a rebuilding stage and might take a while to get back to where he wants to be. I see this team having a lot of potential for next year but the comments from Perno really are discouraging.

Though the baseball team will basically have to win about 10 of their last 15 SEC games to make the SEC Tournament, they would still have to win the tourney to get into the NCAA's. However, other things to look forward to include:

May 4th, David Price of Vanderbilt will pitch against Georgia in Athens. There's a great chance he will find himself on a Major League roster by the end of the year.

BC plays Calvary in baseball on Monday for those in Savannah.

Athens twilight rolls into town. Always a good time.

May 5th- Kentucky Derby.

Two of the top 5 days of the year come back-to-back. May 17th and 18th.
Tennis Team will win the National Championship, Suns win the NBA, and Vaughn Taylor wins The Players.
To Tiftarea and JD, beautiful people with a draw and allure that makes this time of year that much better!

The Build Up!

As some of you probably know this weekend is shaping up to be out of control. Of course what I am refering to is Beerfest two brought to you exclusively by Mussolini Maher himself.

Just to emphasis the extent of what we are expecting, late last week I received a phone call from a Jeremy Thompson in Atlanta of whom I havent spoken to since around Christmas asking if what he heard was correct. I confirmed his queries and requested that he get a four member team ready for the weekend. On top of that, I haven't gone to a class since last Tuesday without inviting at least one person to stop by on Saturday. Whether or not they show is a different question, but shit who cares.

Things to look for on saturday:
- Anywhere between 80 to 150 people including probably around 5-10 with badges, handcuffs and guns (they might show up late)
- 8-12 kegs
- 2-6 fights, probably one being between donnie in leighton, kyle and leighton, and leighton and stephanie.

"Barton: Navy's ex-QB gets blindsided"

http://savannahnow.com/node/231191

The Savannah Morning News editorial page had a good opinion piece on the Lamar Owens situation a while back, so you may have seen it already. But it's new to me.

Some excerpts:

"Where does a young man go to recover his reputation? If anyone has a clue, call Lamar Owens at the U.S. Naval Academy.

His future is riding on it."

"The jury found Owens guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer, but declined to impose any punishment for it. That's the military justice system's equivalent of a wrist slap.

It said Owens did wrong - and there's no question he did - but that his mistake shouldn't cost him his career.

And that seemed fair. Even the higher ups at the Naval Sea System Command, which oversees the Washington Navy Yard where Owens had been assigned to administrative duty, agreed.

But then Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt, the Naval Academy's superintendent, delivered a blind-side tackle last week."

"Let's hope Savannah's two congressmen, Jack Kingston and John Barrow, join in.

Owens and his family back home in Savannah paid a steep price when the young man was accused of rape. He shouldn't keep paying for a crime that a jury said he didn't commit. But if that's the Navy's way, then two words apply: Go. Army."

The Week in Review

Yeah, so the whole Friday Haiku idea was a BUST. I've now decided to make Sunday the day of the week to discuss the events of the past week related to my life. But for old times sake; please enjoy this one last Haiku:

Big porch on Friday

But Gibson saw more ponies

Beerfest this weekend.

Au revoir( goodbye in French) Haikus...

And now for the new feature...

1: Thank God the Masters ended a week ago. Apparently, Zack Johnson was the least bad golfer in the field. It's obvious that the play of golf is at an all-time low considering that no one broke par. Somewhere, there must be one big ass refrigerator with a lot of pictures in it.

2: Ryan Gibson might be the funniest person to ever walk this earth. I highly recommend befriending him on Facebook and checking out his pictures along with the unique captions produced by the man himself.

3: I am registered for 3 HACE classes next fall. That shit better be a good idea.

4: We are about 5 weeks away from The Beach Bum Parade. I hope that at least half the people on this blog are able to attend. I know Athens has bars, parking lots with about 100 gallons of bleach water, and Stevie B's, but please consider what Beach Bum brings: cold beer, an ocean, a beach, free hamburgers and hot dogs, wet girls, and bars. I know that we, as a group, have had our problems on this day, but it would be stupid for anyone not to attend. Any excuse for missing The Beach Bum Parade is a bad one. Remember: no one is FORCED to drive on that day and Fred is a fire inspector now.

5: October Sky, Rudy, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Patch Adams, and Borat are my top 5 movies of all time. I came to this realization yesterday while watch October Sky and drinking.

6: I thought my beerfest team would include Troughton and Pat Bunger, but now P Lowe tells me it's him, Rooks, me and someone else. If any of yall are heading to the Boro this weekend, we should get a team together, " The Mussolini Hooches".

7: City Bar is one of my top 3 bars in Athens along with GB's and Allgood.

8: If we would have played a BC baseball game on Jackie Robinson Day, would Bunger have worn 42?

9: Shane did not publish a joke this week because HE IS A JOKE.

10: I gurantee that there will be a Bell v. Maher Saturday April 21st.

What a Week

WrestleMania is the greatest spectacle in sports entertainment and also signifies the beginning of undoubtedly the 2nd best week of the year. The disappointment of St. Patrick's Day being 12 months away is beginning to wear off, the weather is becoming ideal, and summer is right around the corner. No matter what you prefer or where you may be, it's a great week, not to mention its Holy Week.

Monday: Atlanta Braves Season Opener; NCAA Basketball National Championship Game
Tuesday: Clemson @ Georgia Baseball
Wednesday: Georgia @ Clemson Baseball
Thursday: First Round of The Masters ; Savannah Sand Gnats Home Opener
Friday: The Masters ; Braves Home Opener
Saturday: The Masters ; G-Day
Sunday: Masters Sunday

The Grandest Stage of Them All

Wrestlemania 23 is set to take place in Detroit at Ford Field in approximately three hours. It's the biggest event of the year in sports entertainment and it's the event the WWE bases its entire year around. It attracts attention from all over the globe and there's always a lot of celebrities in attendance. Words cannot truly describe the magnitude of a Wrestlemania so I'm just gonna include the final Wrestlemania 23 card and my predictions (and a video that I'm sure will make some people chuckle):
- WWE World Title Match: John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels
My prediction: HBK wins. I hate John Cena because he's an Eminem wannabe.
- WWE World Heavyweight Title Match: Batista vs. The Undertaker
My prediction: Taker's never lost at Wrestlemania and I don't think Batista is going to break his undefeated streak.
- Battle of the Billionaires: Umaga w/ Vince McMahon vs. Bobby Lashley w/ Donald Trump
My prediction: Lashley wins because there's no way Trump is going to get his head shaved. However that would be the ULTIMATE Vinnie Mac screwjob.
- Money in the Bank Ladder Match - Edge, Randy Orton, Finlay, Booker, CM Punk, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Kennedy
My prediction: Edge wins because he's the top heel at the moment and Orton's in the WWE doghouse with the steroid story in Sports Illustrated.
- ECW Originals vs. The New Breed - Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, RVD, Sandman vs. Matt Striker, Marcus cor Von, Kevin Thorn, Elijah Burke
My prediction: I have no idea who any of these people are except for RVD because I don't watch ECW but I'll take the New Breed because I'm not a big RVD fan either.
- WWE Women's Title Lumberjill Match: Melina vs. Ashley Massaro
My prediction: Don't really care but I think Ashley will win because she's getting a lot of attention now with her recent Playboy spread.
- Kane vs. The Great Khali
My prediction: Great Khali wins a terrible match because I read Kane is suppose to be taking some time off after Wrestlemania to heal up.
- WWE U.S. Title Match: Chris Benoit vs. MVP
My prediction: Benoit wins and the fact that MVP is a part of Wrestlemania and Flair and Carlito aren't makes me want to throw up.

Five Things I'd Pay Atleast $5 To See (Concerning College Basketball)

-Greg Oden's highschool picture in my grandfather's yearbook.
-'Joey' Noah struck by lightning
-Patrick Ewing (Sr) eating a banana
-Al Horford doing a quatro-front flip dunk (NBA Jam's style)
and lastly
-The Selection Committee realizing their mistake putting UGA in the NCAA tournament championship as long as they bring back Joey Waldrop to have the a match-up for the ages...Waldrop v. Oden

Joke of the Week

Whats the difference between a blond and a Mosquito?
The mosquito stops sucking after you slap it.

Every Silver Lining...

Sorry about the Grateful Dead referance (I couldn't think of an applicable WSP quote) but it was neccesary in accurately portraiting my point. Although March is hands down the best month of the year this basketball season has shown me some disappointment. I would like to start of by saying that the reason sports are so great is the conversation that takes place as a result of incredible comebacks, jaw dropping dunks, and all around powerfull teams- UF may be the best alltime, Noah being the frontman. This basketball season, however, has been disappointing because I have spent most of my time watching the games with Leighton argueing that Notre Dame somehow got snubbed, with Brandon talking strategy about Duke, and with countless people mentioning that Greg Oden looks like wise Lebron (yeah we get it and it really wasnt funny the first time you brought it up).

Soooo lets keep this brief because I am lazy and don't want to write anymore but also because ya'll probably already stopped reading. I guess what I am trying to say is that I hate Brandon and the SEC is the best conference in basketball.

Speedin' across the Intercoastal...

For those who think I'm making this stuff up, these are Donzi boats. The boat above is part of Donzi's ZR series. It's a Donzi 38ZR to be specific. With over 1,050 horsepower, this boat tops out at an amazing 91 mph. The 2005 June edition of the Robb Report (a report displaying the only the best in luxury lifestyles- something Ric Flair knows quite a lot about) named the Donzi 38ZR its "Best of the Best" pick in the powerboat category. A boat like this will run you about $350,000 brand new, but for those of us on a tight budget you can get a used Donzi 38ZR for a cheap $200,000. I won't get into to any other details but if you do have any questions, you can consult Donzi's official website at:

And oh yeah, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs

It was just announced that Georgia will host Fresno State in the first round of the NIT Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Fresno went 22-9 this year, 10-6 in the WAC. They beat Creighton earlier in the year and lost to Stanford by just two points, so, even on the surface, this looks like a tough game. After a quick look at their roster, they remind me a of Auburn a little bit in that they don't have a lot of size, but they do have five players averaging double figures.

The draw could've been much worse, however. Fresno will be traveling across the country on pretty short notice, which should help. Not surprisingly, the home team's ability to motivate themselves will be the biggest key to this game.

Georgia's portion of the bracket looks like this:

1. Air Force
8. Austin Peay

4. Georgia
5. Fresno State

3. DePaul
6. Hofstra

2. Kansas State
7. Vermont

Brackets Are Out

The field has been announced, so we have four days to join the group and complete a bracket.

Anybody > Georgia

The gymnastic team falling on Sunday was the only suitable way for this weekend to end. I believe that this was the most disappointing 3 day stretch for Georgia athletics since I have been a student. Baseball swept by USC. Basketball team must now pull off a miracle. Women's team looked like St. Peter's 1998 7th grade boys team. I'm now going to start tailgating for Tennis matches.

The loss which by far and away hurt the most was the men's basketball team against Tennessee. It was a must win, would have given the Dawgs a winning record in the conference and a good shot at the NCAA tournament. Now it will most likely take an SEC tournament title. I personally have enjoyed following this team and having a dog in the fight makes college basketball a lot more fun. Even though Georgia kept itself on the bubble until just a week before Selection Sunday, Georgia could never get a significant road win or win the games they weren't suppose to. Sure, we wanted Mercer to be a little better than he was for most of the year, but it was evident that he was a crucial part to the Georgia lineup. His loss and a mistake by Levi Stukes didn't make Georgia's chase for a tourney bid any easier. But the Dawgs went 3-6 in its final 9 SEC games and won only 3 games all season in which they entered as the underdog( Arkansas, Wake Forest, Gonzaga). There is no doubt that Georgia has come a long way in the past 3 years, but not to a level which is NCAA tournament worthy. If Georgia wins the SEC tournament though, it will go down as the greatest accomplishment in school history.

It is still very early in the college baseball season but getting swept at home 2 out of 3 series to start the season is not a good sign. They have been close in almost every loss but its starting to show that there are no more Felmy's, JJ's, or Side's. They can't score. Cerione went 1-13 against USC and circulating scouting reports are catching up with him. Beckham has great power but is not the best cleanup hitter. Wyatt and Piesel have been solid but have to do more somehow. The pitching is still good and the reason I remain somewhat optimistic. However, Fields has looked shaky in 3 of his outings and has already taken 2 losses. Earls is going to take Leaver's place as the # 3 starter putting Leaver in what has the potential to be the best bullpen in the SEC. But if we don't hit it will make the trips to Clemson and Atlanta rather pointless.

I still think the women will get a two seed but don't see them getting to the Elite 8. I know a lot of us were really high on this team going into the year and didn't even know what we would get out of the 3 Freshmen. They just struggle to score points on a consistent basis and really suffer when a team puts good pressure on the ball. If Chambers gets hot in the tournament they have a chance to get a little further than I think they can at this point in time.

Softball team: See Larry.

Tennis team is awesome and will win the school a National Championship.

The drive to New Orleans officially begins tomorrow.

And Henessee Tennessee tootles the flute and the music is somethin' grand A credit to old Ireland is MacNamara's band. 12 Days.

Tennessee at Georgia

This is the column (slightly modified) I chose not to try and get published this week. Sorry about the length.

There seems to be a bit of dissension among Georgia fans and college basketball “experts” over exactly what the Bulldogs need to do in order to lock up a spot in the Big Dance. Some think they have to win Saturday and win one game at the SEC Tournament, some think they need to win two in Atlanta, and others think they’ve got nothing to play for.

So aside from those who think Drexel and Georgia Tech are absolute locks, everyone agrees that Georgia must beat Tennessee on Saturday, or the season probably is over.

Now, call me naïve if you want, but I’m going to assume that the Dogs play with a full lineup on Saturday. Bliss will get a couple of days to rest what appears to be a pretty minor injury, Albert Jackson was fine the last time he dislocated his shoulder, and I just can’t see Levi Stukes watching from the bench on Senior Day.

As for the implications of this game, trying to keep your Tournament hopes alive against a team that has won six of its last seven, just beaten Florida, features the league’s leading scorer, and won its last road game in the SEC is obviously a tall order.

Now, this is obviously from a fan’s perspective, so maybe the players and coaches don’t even remember any of the things I’m about to mention, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t provide at least a little extra motivation.

On February 11, 2006, Tennessee came into Athens riding a six-game winning streak and had a ridiculous record (19-3, 8-2 SEC).

One Volunteer fan set the tone for the afternoon during the national anthem. Just before the end, the guy filled a silent Stegeman Coliseum with the loudest “Go Vols!” I’ve ever heard.

From that point on, the Tennessee Volunteers and their fans literally took over the Coliseum for the rest of the day. At times it seemed like there were more Tennessee fans than Georgia fans as the entire upper deck was filled to capacity. Chris Lofton hit nine 3-pointers and scored 33 points as the Vols held off a big comeback to win 83-78.

And how did Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl decide to celebrate this really-not-so-monumental victory?

By sending his players up into the stands, of course. In the other team’s arena.

I like Pearl, and the excitement he’s brought to the SEC East, but I haven’t forgotten that incident since the moment it happened. And I hope the Georgia players and coaches haven’t, either.

So everyone, do your part as a fan to make sure Tennessee doesn’t get the opportunity to do it again.

We fill the place up for the likes of Kentucky, LSU, and Florida, but we can’t do it for Mississippi State (another do-or-die game)? This is the season. I know Tennessee didn’t go to the Final Four last year like LSU and Florida did, and I know they don’t have the most wins all-time, like Kentucky does.

But they are all that stands between this Georgia team and history: the eighth NCAA bid for this school, ever.

So, if by some strange coincidence, someone reading this is a student who goes to the “big” games, but wants to sit this one out because it’s on TV, I’ve got one thing to say to you:

It’s time we, as fans, spent a little less time worrying about what’s written across the front of the visiting team’s jerseys, and spend a lot more time supporting the names on the backs of the home team’s jerseys.

Basketball Update

960 The Ref says Felton announced that Stukes will play on Saturday. More to come as I search for confirmation.

Edit: Confirmed. Here's the AJC's article about it.

Not to be all South Carolina or anything, but wasn't that a moral victory?

Georgia lost at Rupp Arena last night while using a seven-man rotation, which was to be expected (especially when the home team is shooting 72% on threes in the second half).

But it probably won't matter much if the Dogs can hold serve at home on Saturday against Tennessee, which would give them their first winning season in the SEC since '03-'04 and, I hope, first NCAA Tournament berth since '02-'03.

So what can we take out of Georgia's 107th all-time loss to Kentucky?

Well, with Levi Stukes suspended and Dave Bliss (hip) and Albert Jackson (shoulder) injured, they were forced to gut it out with just six scholarship players (walk-on Corey Butler also played significant minutes).

Terrance Woodbury played one of the best games of his career, Sundiata Gaines played all but about 20 seconds, and Steve Newman played 39 minutes.

This morning's post on the Georgia Sports Blog says it all, I think:

UK fans leaving the building heard the following announcement on the PA system...

"Attention Rupp Arena janitors:
Please bring mops to the court.
It's covered with Steve Newman's guts."
Looking at last night's performance, coupled with what he did last Saturday against Mississippi State, you've got to think Newman will really go out with a bang on Senior Day.

I make this post to set up my next post, where I plan to offer up some thoughts about Saturday's monumental game with Tennessee.

"Globetrotter"

Savannah State has made ESPN.com again, but it's for something good this time.

Noell Barnidge recently wrote an article profiling a Tiger basketball player, and it was picked up by columnist Pat Forde. He interviewed the guy for his weekly Forde Minutes.

Read the SavannahNow article. It's really good, one of the best things I've seen on there in a while.

RUTHLESS INTERROGATION

This is a special episode of Ruthless Interrogation -- not like the "very special episode of 'ER'" that NBC tries to pull over on the public approximately once a month -- but certainly something outside the norm.

Meet Joshua Obiajunwa (39), The Minutes' favorite player of the season. You'll see why shortly.

The Minutes recently read an extraordinary story by Noell Barnidge of the Savannah (Ga.) Morning News about the Savannah State senior forward who, in his spare time, cleans the school gym. He's also averaged 10.7 points and 8.0 rebounds for the resurgent Tigers, who under miracle-working coach Horace Broadnax (40) (a member of the 1984 NCAA champion Georgetown Hoyas) have gone 12-17 after records of 0-28 and 2-28 the previous two seasons.

Cleaning the gym has become his part-time job. When The Minutes caught up with the Nigeria native Monday, he was just coming into the arena to start sweeping in preparation for the women's game that night.

Forde Minutes: How did you get started cleaning the gym?

Joshua Obiajunwa: After the games, I stay around and shoot. The first time I did it, the floor was kind of dusty, so I decided to sweep it before I shoot. After I did it a couple times, a part-time job offer was made to me and I decided to take it.

FM: What was life like growing up in Nigeria?

JO: I have three brothers and three sisters, I'm the last in the family. Basically, growing up, we didn't have that much. You might not have everything you wanted, but everything you needed was given to you.

FM: How long have you been in the United States?

JO: This is my fourth year. Coming to the States was quite a struggle. Taking the [college entrance] exam, getting a visa, then coming over here and not knowing anyone, it's been quite a transition. The social life, the social trends, the academics, everything has been a transition.

FM: You've said you learned your work ethic from your mom, Jessy. What has she meant to you?

JO: What can I say? You can never say enough. I don't think there are enough words or actions to express what she has done for me. I hope someday to let her know. She sacrificed a lot for us.

FM: You played three years of Division II ball at Benedict College in South Carolina, and this is your only year of eligibility at Savannah State. How did you end up there?

JO: When I graduated from Benedict (with a 3.93 GPA in political science), I wanted to go straight to law school. Then I realized the timing wasn't right to go straight to law school. So a family friend said, 'You still have a year to play. Why don't you play your last year?' I decided to play, and luckily the word got around to coach Broadnax and everything worked out perfectly.

FM: How has Division I ball been?

JO: When you play against the best, the best in you comes out. When we played Louisville, it was amazing to see Rick Pitino. In Nigeria, I always watched his tapes on how to be a better basketball player.

FM: What happens now?

JO: Finishing my master's, that's the next thing on my agenda. (SSU athletic director Tony O'Neal told Obiajunwa over the weekend that the school will pay his way to complete his graduate degree. "You've earned that, kid," O'Neal told him.) Then I will get ready for the LSAT exam and law school.

But first, The Minutes' favorite player of 2006-07 had a gym to clean.

Joke of the Week

Being march and all I continued with the Irish theme. Enjoy.

Irishmen in an Aussie bar
A man walked into a Melbourne bar and ordered a pint of the dark liquid. 'Excuse me,' said the only other drinker. 'Is that an Irish accent I detect?' 'It is, sir. Dublin to be exact.' 'Bless my soul,' said the first. 'I'm a Dublin man meself. Ballymun to be precise.' 'Be-jaysus, aren't I from Ballymun meself - Carberry Street in actual fact,' remarked the second. 'Carberry Street is where I was born and raised meself, and St Joseph's was me parish church, Father Dunne the parish priest.' 'Didn't I go to nine o'clock mass every Sunday at St Joseph's. What an amazingly small world. Did you go to St Joseph's School?' 'I did. I was in Miss Slattery's class.' 'God in heaven. So was I.' Just then the phone rang and the Aussie barman said, 'Not too busy at the moment. In fact there's just the Murphy twins here.

Happy March

Welcome back to White History months and perhaps the greatest month of the year and congrats to all on making it out of a long drawn February. March is a great time of the year when people all around the United States sway their concerns from African American culture (i.e. "Jamie Fox's LaughaPalozza", "When the Levee Breaks") and focuses on Mayonaisse, wheat bread, curling, and all other things "white." This March, as all Marches usually do, has a lot of things to look forward to and if I miss anything please dont hesitate to bring it to my attention.
Things to look for in March
-New Season of South Park scheduled to start Wednesday March 7th, and if the new episodes are as funny as the last two seasons than we are in for a treat.
-The best sporting event of the year (Im talking about Basketball of course, not any of those "fad" "sports" such as soccer or nascar) is heating up as we are only about a week away from conference championships and about two weeks away from the big dance.
-March is also filled with numerous birthdays, myself included. Starting the month of right on the 5th is our boy PLowe and all are encouraged to show him hows it done the first weekend of spring break. Other notable birthdays include Brandon Sauers, Jody Wright, and i believe (correct me if im wrong) our own contributor Larry Coneff.
-Last but certainly not least we are only 17 (10 if your on Tybee time) days away from the greatest holiday of the year. This is the time of the year where we all can celebrate our Irish Heritage (except Donnie-go back to England or wherever you came from), and get crazy in the streets of Savannah. I encourage all "visitors" to join in the festivities.

No Stukes Tonight

Inside sources tell me that Levi Stukes has not made the trip to Lexington. Probably will be termed a violation of team rules.

Woodbury and Corey Butler will have to pick up the slack, I guess.

We may need a miracle on Senior Night at Rupp.

GEORGIA

Another huge week for Georgia athletics and probaly the biggest week for the Georgia basketball program in 5 years. The scenarios seem to be endless for Georgia. However, its real easy if Georgia loses both this week; they have to win the conference tounament to get a ticket. If Georgia wins both, they're in. If Georgia splits, a lot is left up in the air with at least a win in Atlanta probaly needed. Georgia can do as well as a 2 seed in the east if they win both games, and as bad as a 5 seed if they lose both. Vandy will most likely lock up the 2 seed with a win @ USC. Therefore, we need Florida to play well. If Georgia splits this week and Florida wins @ Tennessee and vs. Kentucky, Georgia would get the 3 seed in the east. If Tenessee loses both this week and Kentucky wins both of their games this week, we get the 4 seed and Tennessee gets the 5. If we beat Kentucky but lose to Tenessee, we would still be the 4 and Kentucky would be the 5. Simply put, it would only help our resume to finish ahead of Kentucky and Tennessee in the standings. But a 4 seed in the east would present the best bracket layout for Georgia. Either way Georgia has to win at least one this week and hope for some success in the Dome.

-The Baseball team plays host to a very good Winthrop team on Tuesday and arguably the most storied program in college baseball history iwith Southern California this weekend. Georgia needs a 3-1 week to get above .500. The pithing has been better than expected and the hitting has been about what most expected. Even though Georgia stands at 3-4, they are just a couple of pitches away from being 5-2. Freshmen CF Cerione, and Freshmen pitchers McCree and Earls have shown signs of brilliance.

-Tennis team won the National Indoors last week. Tuesday they match up against Tulsa, but more importantly #3 Nationally ranked John Isner takes on the #2 nationally ranked player. Sunday is the biggest home match of the year against LSU.

-Ashley Houts was again named SEC Freshman of the week and Christie Marshall continues to excell. The Lady Dawgs finished 2nd in the conference and if they make it to the SEC final they will most likely receive a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.

-Softball team was miserable in Columbus. Heads to Hawaii this week and will probaly pass over Doucette on the flight. Larry has requested that any questions about the team be directed to him.

Joke of the Week

It's the best I could do give me a break.

Swollen At The Doctor's

Don't laugh!" said the patient, Ed."Of course I won't laugh," the doctor said. "I'm a professional. In over twenty years I've never laughed at a patient."
"Okay then," Ed said, and proceeded to drop his trousers, revealing the tiniest penis the doctor had ever seen. It couldn't have been bigger than the size of a AAA battery.
Unable to control himself, the doctor started giggling, then fell laughing to the floor. Ten minutes later he was able to struggle to his feet and regain his composure.
"I'm so sorry," said the doctor. "I really am. I don't know what came over me. On my honor as a doctor and a gentleman, I promise it won't happen again.
Now...what seems to be the problem?""It's swollen," Ed replied.

R.F.I. 2007

22 February 2007: The Benedictine Brigade retains the Gold Star as an Honor Unit with Distinction.

As the Brigade Executive Officer, my principle duty is to assist the Brigade Commander in all areas ascribed to the administration and coordination of the staff. The alleviation of these duties from the realm of responsibility of the Brigade commander, allow him to focus more acutely on the the broader aspects of his command. Throughout the school year the Brigade commander and I have worked together closely....

Joke of the Week

A man walks into a bar, absolutely infuriated. He grabs a seat and hunches over. The bartender leans over, sayin "What can I get'ya". The man orders a beer. As the bartender gives him the beer he asks him why he's in such a mood. The man replies saying " Lawyers are assholes man." Suddenly, a man in the back stood up. "HEY BUDDY, I TAKE OFFENCE TO THAT!" The man sitting down scowels and says "What are you a lawyer?" The man replies "NO, IM AN ASSHOLE".

Dan Hawkins Wrestling Promo

For those of you who haven't heard it.

This follows the standard professional wrestling promo formula of: start off calm, explaining the situation --> surprising outburst --> liberal use of the word "Brother." Priceless.

Georgia vs. Duke?

Georgia is close to finalizing a basketball game against Duke at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The contest would take place next season (2007-2008) on a date to be determined. Coach Felton has hinted at this the past couple of weeks after being in contact with Coach K.

And the Streak Ends

For the first time in over a decade and a half, the Benedictine basketball program recorded a postseason victory. The Cadets defeated Harlem 55-47 in the first round of the 3-AAA region playoffs at Cross Creek High school. BC advances to play Glenn Hills, ranked #7 and #4 in two different polls, on Thursday night at Cross Creek. The winner will advance to the State Playoffs.

It's On!

As it has recently been brought to my attention as I'm sure it has to all of you, Donnie decided, this weekend, that it was a good idea to piss in my basketball shoes. I just wanted to take this time to tell everyone that this means war. The motives are still unclear but a very reliable source has informed me of the time and location that this mischievous act took place.Whether it was in between him punching holes in the ceiling or sliding down the steps naked is still unconfirmed.

Joke of the Week

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?"Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I'm the breadwinner of the family, so let's call me capitalism. Your Mom, she's the administrator of the money, so we'll call her the Government. We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the people. The nanny, we'll consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we'll call him the Future. Now, think about that and see if that makes sense,"So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what dad had said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed. The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I think I Understand the concept of politics now." The father says, "Good son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about." The little boy replies, "Well, while Capitalism is screwing the Working Class, the Government is sound asleep, the People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit."

PGA Tour Loses Tournament

I'm posting this because I know some of us like to follow golf and one of us is just enamoured with the multitiude of different scoring formats for golf. The International tournament has been cancelled, effective immeadiately. The tournament is being cancelled due to the lack of sponsor interest and the inability of the tournament to fund itself. The International at Castle Pines , held just outside of Denver, is most known for using the modified Stableford scoring system which rewards agressive play. The tournament was moved to the week of Independence Day in 2007 after being played in August for a majority of its existence. One of my 10 favorite tournaments, The International leaves a void that forces the tour to search for a replacement in the heart of golf season. Washington D.C is the #1 candidate to hold the new event but oddly there has been a significant push by one of the tour's players for the tounament to be held in either Las Vegas or Bentonville.

BIG Week

This week allows me to ignore the dreadful weather of Athens in February and shines light on how good it can be to be a student at Georgia. Though I have 2 tests this week and two more next week, its not too often you get to see two defending national champions play in the same week and go eat and drink on behalf of 20+ 18-year olds.
The baseball team opens with Oregon St. in a series that does not hold a lot of importance but will be interesting to see a lot of new names. The pitching could be stong with Leaver, Moreau, Dodson, and Holder. All showed a lot of promise last year but none were full time starters. Fields might be the best reliever in the country and will have to be fantastic to carry an average bullpen. Wyatt,Beckham, and Piesel are the only proven position starters. Wyatt will start in Center but I wouldn't be surprised to see him move back to Left and Piesel is moving to First. Olsen in Right and Robbins at DH are the other returnees who have significant experience. There will be Freshman everywhere and that will probably lead to struggles in the early portions of the season when Georgia plays one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Georgia is capable of being in every game if the Starters pitch to their capabilities. I see them finishing in the 7-8 range in the final SEC standings and grabbing a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament. With a young team, that would be a nice season. Georgia wins one this weekend against the Beavers.
The Basketball team was simply disappointing last week. The lack of intensity and the fact that Michael Griffin could have shot better from long distance led to 2 poor showings. Mike Mercer has to be a whole new player or his minutes need to decrease. He has done nothing but hurt Georgia's progress in the last two weeks. More importantly Brown needs more touches. He might be a 1st teamer if he gets an adequate amount. He's playing like one of the best post players this University has seen in a long time. And I continue to see that Georgia goes as Stukes' shooting does and he didn't go last week. A win against Florida would make everything better but a loss might be the beginning of a run to the NIT. Brewer will play with what turned out to be just a bruised knee. Once again Stegeman will be packed and just that is a great sign for the program and basketball recruiting.
The poor finish by Georgia in football recruiting puts a little damper on signing day but we addressed most of our needs and I am not as down about this class as most are. Huge week that also includes a #2 vs. #3 matchup in Gymnastics and by weeks end the countdown will reach 33. Go Dawgs.

Football: Wednesday- Signing Day (ALL DAY)
Basketball: Wednesday vs. Florida(7:30) ; Saturday at South Carolina(7:00)
Baseball: Friday-Sunday vs. Oregon St. (5:00, 2:00, 1:00)

Bad Night

After the LSU win on Sunday, Mike Mercer said, "you live by the 3 and you die by the 3." I'd say 6-26 is dying. The loss is quite disappointing especially with a Lofton-less Tennessee team. However, you had to know that a poor performance was coming and it happened in Knoxville. The loss is OK but it opens my eyes to how big of a game Vanderbilt is. Say Georgia loses to Vandy and has to follow up with a matchup against the #1 team in the country. It is easy to see the Dawgs in the middle of the SEC pack this time next week with a lot of work to do to get to the tournament. Don't get me wrong, the Dawgs are still in good shape but a season can change so quick. The good thing is that its going to be hard for Georgia to shoot any worse than they did tonight. No matter what happens Georgia MUST get more consistent play from Mercer. His poor play in the last week was overshadowed by the teams success. His athletic ability is second to none and is a tremendous defensive player, but his shooting numbers are down from last year and he is going to have to find new ways to score. Saturday is huge for Georgia and what makes it even tougher is the fact that its just as important for Vandy. Gaines made a stupid decision in the final seconds that hopefully won't be serious. But the guy is an absolute stud. Good win for Tennessee. Thoughts?

Lofton's Status

By Randy Moore Posted Jan 29, 2007

Just as you must walk before you can run, you must practice before you can play. That being the case, this afternoon could be a big day for the University of Tennessee basketball team's star player.

Chris Lofton will practice today for the first time since he severely sprained his right ankle two minutes into the second half of the Vols' Jan. 20 game with South Carolina. It won't be a full-scale practice but it still represents a key step in Lofton's quest to be available for action in Wednesday night's home game against Georgia.

“We'll practice today but we're not going to go hard,” head coach Bruce Pearl said during his Monday afternoon media conference. “We'd like to have Chris out there – reviewing play calls, maybe going through a half-speed scout, getting shots – and see how he's able to move within the framework of a half-speed practice.

The Vols normally hold a full-speed practice on Monday after a Saturday game. Since they played on Sunday last weekend (losing 76-57 at Kentucky), however, Pearl is scaling back a bit today.

“Tomorrow we'll go live and we'll go full-speed,” the coach said, adding that Lofton “will take the day off. We will treat the ankle and see how it responds to swelling and pain, whatever he's going to incur. That would be how you'd normally rehab anyway.”

Regardless of what happens in practice today, there will be no decision on Lofton's availability for the Georgia game until shortly before tip-off on Wednesday. “It will be a game-time decision,” Pearl said.

Boomer, Choppin, and Mudcat

With Signing Day a little over a week away, most of the big time recruits are firm with their verbal commitments and college coaches are starting to hit the class of 2008 harder. Probably the most sought after recruit to come out of Savannah since Josh Mallard, is a part of that '08 class. Jenkins Running Back Franklin Green has already attracted attention from a number of ACC and SEC schools including Georgia. This Thursday Bob Stoops and Greg Schiano are scheduled to visit with Green in Savannah. Green was the recipient of the coveted Finnichario Award and was also named The Savannah Morning News Player of the Year as well as The Savannah QB Club Back of the Year. He rushed for 1800+ yards and 18 Touchdowns as a Junior. Against BC he ran for 235 yeards and scored twice.

* "Mudcat" Elmore has decided to forego an offer to become a graduate assistant on the UAB football staff under former Georgia Offensive coordinator Neil Callaway. He will sign on to be the Defensive Line Coach for Charlton Co. High School.

Seeing Red? Hopefully Tubby and Big Baby Will.

After one of the the most heartbreaking losses in at least a decade, the Georgia basketball team still has a chance to be special. The dawgs have shown they can play with the big boys but have yet to record a signature win against a currently ranked team. Georgia is around the 5o mark in the RPI rankings and are going to need at least two impressive road wins along the way to really boost their resume. But what makes this week special is the fact that its late January and Georgia will be playing a meaningful game at Stegeman. ESPN listed 15 games to watch this week, both of Georgia's games are on the list. Idealy it would be nice for the dawgs to win both. But a split is the least we can have. I'm not going to say the dawgs are done if they get swept but it will sure make it hard for Georgia to get back in the NCAA tournament picture. The Western Kentucky game was a very bad loss but losing to the #1 and #2 teams in the country is nothing to be ashamed of. Losing at Clemson and at Tech is certainly not going to help but it doesn't hurt a whole lot. If Georgia can go 10-6 in maybe the toughest conference in the country they are defiantly in. 9-7 would put them on the bubble and make the SEC tournament extremely crucial. I don't see a "Georgia" getting in with an 8-8 conference record. The season is far from over but this week will go a long way in defining this season and hopefully make everyone forget about the Bama loss. There is no reason for the Coliseum not to be sold out for both games. Either way its nice to be excited about Georgia basketball and more important the dawgs are actually relevant to the basketball world.

The 184th St. Patrick's Day Parade

Most, if not all of you, will find this irrrelevant at this point in time but it was brought to my attention and thought it was important and very interesting. The 183rd St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah will be held on its traditional date of March 17th in 2007. On years when March 17th falls on a Sunday it is standard procedure for the parade to be held on the 16th. Sunday is being skipped next year and the 17th will fall on a Monday in 2008. However, Easter will be on March 23rd in 2008. So for the first time since 1913 St. Patrick's Day occurs during Holy Week. Recently Bishop Boland has stated that the 2008 parade will most likely take place on Friday March 14th to accomodate the conflict.-- For those who will be enrolled in college courses in 2008, a majority of schools including the University of Georgia resume classes following spring break on March 17th.

Top 5 Days for 2007

Honorable Mention: July 3rd; Athens Bicycle Races; Masters; Oregon State baseball series; Who's Bad performances; Motown Mondays; Tuscaloosa; Tybee Irish Parade which will be interesting seeing that one of the parade staffers faces a quandary.

5. October 19: BC Homecoming - Tentative date for BC's homecoming falls perfectly in 2007. If this date does not change there is no excuse for anyone to miss what is going to be the 5th football season anniversary for some of us. It comes on Georgia's lone off week.

4. May 17: Columbus Catfish @ Savannah Sand Gnats - The biggest weekend of the year starts off with a bang. The first Thirsty Thursday of the Summer always brings a reunion type crowd.

3. May 18: Beach Bum Parade - The day after the first Thirsty Thursday of the Summer will show who is a contender and who is a pretender. The parade is a week earlier this year and I'm not 100% sure that one of the reasons can not be attributed to that certain Tybee Irish Heritage parade staffer.

2. September 1: Oklahoma State @ Georgia - Depending on the game time, which should be no earlier than 5:30, I can see this one competing with Auburn 2005 as one of the best of all time.

1. March 17: The feast of St. Patrick - Always has been and always will be the grandest day of all.

20 06 year in review

10: Early January- After beating LSU in the JV championship, UGA goes on to play West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl I think. Well, anyways UGA gets down big, makes a super comeback, but falls short at the end. Some of us started out drinking on Tybee Island while a few of us or one of us ended up driving home. This would turn out to be an indication of things to come.

9: Some RANDOM day in March- Many, many people flock to Savannah for a parade of some sort. The majority of the people wear green while a few of the elite wear white coats. Anyways, the day, as usual, lives up to expectations. I for one, got to hear Mr. Hicks call Chief Warrant Officer Schaeffer an asshole. It also became apparent that a few friends of mine had a room at the Desoto Hilton. Still, others questioned young ladies about their thoughts on riding Space Mountain. This was truly a great day to be alive.

8: Nearing the end of the year, one of my associates decided to see, once again, what brown could do for him. Well brown got his ass bitten by a dog. Thank heavens it was not a maltese, cat, lhasa alsa, or lhasa poo because it may have been fatal and that would have ruined my 2007.

7: April: Captain Morgan goes to a baseball game. Rickie and P Mac get kicked out. Apparently, Rick dropped a few f bombs, and a guy asked him to stop. As does his lhaso poo (aka the MURPH), Ric continues to make noise even when told to shut up. I believe Ric yelled something to the effect of, that is fucking bullshit. Well, he and Pat are asked to leave. Ric tells the officer, " I am not even going to argue." He sure has a way with the law.

6: Some Rutgers game: Many of us decide to watch the game at my apartment before going downtown. Ric decides to go to Firehouse before 9:05. Well, long story short, he takes a lot of shots, Stone Colds 3 bourbon and cokes, and gives the ACC police the middle finger. The remainder of the night is an enigma. All that is known is that he stained his pants, rolled on GEN B's upstairs floor, and unintentionally nose-dived into a Southern barstool. Lastly, he claims to only have spent 6o-80 bucks. Sure buddy! I'm going with upwards of 144.

5: July 2nd: Fresh off his abscense on Raw to clear up a filthy divorce, Rickie makes his way back down to Tybee Island. He just had to have the coldest beer in America! In only 2 rounds, Bennie knocks GFS4 out. The rest of the night, as the case with many others, is an enigma.

4: Shortly after item 6- Ric goes cold turkey. And he has yet to have a beer since. NOT!! This was extremely entertaining for the 4-16 days it lasted. All I remember is Vinnie Mac giving him the screw job at B st one night but him only drinking that drink all night which surprised me. Also, he lasted through the Auburn game. After that, he has pretty much stayed on path toward level 4,whatever that is.

3: Jan 1- December 31: All the Paul Webber BS. No votes for Paul Webber Man of the Year? Of course not, he does not exist. But it sure was fun to talk about him.

2: Beach Bum Parade: If it wasn't for the Atlantic Ocean, everything would have been fine. Those GD tides got Ric's ass, swept his sandals straight out to sea. From there, he walked 500 miles and was basically too drunk and too blistered to walk, so he drove. Well, Fred Anderson got his ass. The weird thing was that Ric got a DUI when it was the first time ever that he'd driven drunk. What bad luck.

1: Early Summer/ Late Spring: Younes transfers to Iona. Thank God. He was a tall athletic Lee McCurry who was, at best, a cancer- not only to our basketball team but our entire athletic program. He befriended girls from the volleyball team and ruined their chances as well as hanging with a few guys on the football team and he screwed them up as well. Notice, that as his influence cools, our basketball, football, and volleyball teams will only improve. So in maybe a language that he can actually understand, I say, Vous baiser,Younes, au revoir.

Boise State Over Oklahoma

I'm hyperventilating.

Three tries for a two-point conversion.
Pick six.
Hook and ladder on fourth down to tie.
TD on first play of OT.
Fourth down, direct snap to receiver, throws tying TD.
Statue of Liberty play for the win.
Star tailback proposes to cheerleader girlfriend (Nice job giving it away, Chris Myers).

This isn't real. Not only has FOX taken over the BCS, they've started scripting the games, too.

Prediction: Louisville turns on Bobby Petrino tomorrow night after he tries to give Brian Brohm a cortizone shot at halftime. Michael Bush goes on to call a brilliant offensive game from his crutches on the sidelines, beginning what will become an illustrious coaching career.

The truth behind "The Murph"

Lhasa-Poo

Lhasa Apso / Poodle Hybrid

The Lhasa-Poo is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Lhasa Apso and the Poodle.

Hopefully this clears up any further confusion.

At Least People Are Talking About Oregon

According to the Uni Watch blog, Oregon will be breaking out new helmets for their bowl game tomorrow night, provided they all get shipped in time.

Check out these babies. Are those flames?

Livin' the Dream: 96-83

Who's "livin' the dream" this week? Why, it's the entire Georgia basketball team.

This is all they did on Saturday en route to a 96-83 win over Gonzaga on Saturday:

Levi Stukes: 25 points.
Sundiata Gaines: 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists and just 4 turnovers.
Mike Mercer: 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists.
Rick Majerus said of Steve Newman: "He's got the body of a rec league player and the heart of a lion."

Here's what Mark Few had to say: “Georgia is a really good team. They are an NCAA Tournament team. The other Georgia teams we’ve played have been good too. This team has no weaknesses.”

And Mercer did this:

Dobbs Needs To Improve Toughness? No Way!

David Ching has a nice little rundown of all the guys who redshirted this year in the Columbus Ledger-Inquirer today, with comments from the starters. A couple of highlights:

QUINTIN BANKS

Projected 2007 position: Safety

Height/Weight: 6-2/192

Teammate's comments: "Typical Georgia safety, I guess. The big-hitting safety that everybody says we're missing this year. He has learned the game extremely fast, the playbook. He can answer the questions that coach asks that most guys at that point don't usually know. He's learned the package extremely well." Georgia safety Tra Battle

DEMARCUS DOBBS

Projected 2007 position: Defensive end

Height/Weight: 6-2/270

Teammate's comments: "Great upside. A little quiet, needs to get more of a football mentality, a little more toughness. He has it, but he's a nice guy too, though. When he gets some of that jerk in him, then it's a wrap." Defensive tackle Ray Gant

RESHAD JONES

Projected 2007 position: Safety

Height/Weight: 6-2/188

Teammate's comments: "Reshad's just a natural athlete. Anytime the ball's in the air, he goes up to get it. He may not know the playbook and the scheme as well as (Quintin) Banks, but athletic-wise, he's with the best of us as far as covering and ball skills. He's just a natural at it, you can really tell." Georgia safety Tra Battle

KIANTE TRIPP

Projected 2007 position: Defensive end

Height/Weight: 6-6/272

Teammate's comments: "Perfect frame, perfect size. Big, strong, hard worker. He'll probably be an all-American before he leaves." Defensive end Quentin Moses

Peachtree Ridge: Who Knew?

While watching the grand finale of the state high school semifinals at the Georgia Dome last weekend, Peachtree Ridge's 13-7 win over Warner Robins, two players stood out to me in particular. Neither one was the more highly publicized Cameron Heyward.

The first was Peachtree Ridge quarterback Zack Graham. He stands about 6'4" or 6'5", has a very strong arm, and can really move around. The most impressive thing about him was that he seemed to be a quarterback first, a runner second. And when he did run, he looked like a poor man's Vince Young (which is a huge compliment).

After a little more research, I found that he is a two-star quarterback prospect who is a highly rated basketball player as well. It's hard to tell whether schools have offered him for football or basketball, so maybe somebody can help me out there. Georgia has given him an offer, and I think it's for basketball. It was a little surprising to see him rated so low, so maybe I just saw him have the game of his life, and he hasn't really flown under the radar the way I first thought.

I tell you that to tell you this. The other player who impressed me was Peachtree Ridge's kicker, one of the best high school kickers/punters I've seen since Beers and the Dotsons were booting balls out of Memorial Stadium.

So it definitely came as a shock when I came across an Athens Banner-Herald column by The Greatest Bulldog Ever, Dan Magill, which identified that kicker as none other than Drew Butler, the son of The Greatest Collegiate Kicker Of All Time, Kevin Butler.

Anyway, I hope this kid gets preferred walk-on status at Georgia and follows in his father's footsteps. It would be a great story.

And here's another little tidbit from the article.

Drew wears No. 13 on his jersey. His dad wore No. 5 at Georgia and No. 6 with the Bears.

In an interview with Kevin Monday, I asked him why Drew wore No. 13, and he replied:

"My dad (Joseph Butler) wore No. 13 when he was a halfback at Benedictine Prep in Savannah.

The Multiple Occasion Celebration

Today is quite a significant day in our lives. It's the last day of classes for the first semester; tomorrow is reading day. Today is also the eve of Gannam Day; tomorrow is Fleming's first Gannam Day as a staff member of Benedictine. These things, along with the fact that both Duke and UGA only have one loss a piece call for a celebration. So tonight at #8 Tanyard (not 37 Tanyard), there will be a low country boil at 8 o'clock sharp. Drinks start at 8 and food will be served at about 8:30 after which some of us or maybe one of us will leave for Firehouse while the rest of us will stay to enjoy South Park. The only requirement for entrance is attire and attitude. Attire is class A. Attitude is "girls or bust into overdrive". No more big talking....

Livin' the Dream: One Last Thank-You

I hate to keep banging on Reggie Ball, but... wait a minute, no I don't.

Did you really think I could let the regular season end without featuring the orchestrator of Georgia's season-ending victory and Wake Forest's ACC championship at least once?

On Saturday, Ball completed 8 passes for 117 yards to Calvin Johnson. He completed 1 pass for 12 yards to everybody else. That's 15 of 51 for 171 yards, 0 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in the two biggest games of his career. If that doesn't warrant a Lee Corso "Yo," then I don't know what does.

The performance literally left Philip Wheeler and Joe Anoai in tears.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2004 Champs Sports Bowl MVP.
